I’m sure you’ve seen them. The perfect couple posed in a beautiful background, their special moments captured in a photo to last a lifetime.

But how does it happen? Is there something special about them? Not necessarily! You can get that look, too. Here are 7 tips for a better couples session to help every couple get those amazing photos we all envy.

Why You Should Get a Professional Couples Photography Session

You might be wondering why you should have a couple’s photography session. There are plenty of reasons to capture you and your partner’s story in photos. Whether you are a photo enthusiast or a first-timer, here are a few reasons why you should try it out together.

     Engagement Session

Let your friends and family in on your little secret. Share your engagement through photos. The session can be booked in advance so you can catch the whole ‘Will you marry me?’ in real-time or simply capture the story for others to see.

     Maternity Session

Maternity sessions aren’t exclusively for moms, dads can be included too. Share the intimate moments of maternity photo sessions together as a couple. Go into parenthood as a team.

     Wedding or Elopement

A wedding or elopement is one of the most common reasons for a couple’s photoshoot photography. Capturing not only the biggest moments of the most special day of your relationship but also capturing all the tiny details helps keep the memory alive for years to come.

     Capturing the Moments

Couples can easily lose themselves in the details of everyday life. As seasons pass, it’s easy to let time slip away without taking note of the special moments in each other’s lives. Stopping to celebrate each other’s lives as a team commemorates your shared experiences, no matter how big or small those moments are.

     Ignite the Flame

A couple’s photography session makes for a great date night or a special occasion gift to one another. Celebrate your anniversary by capturing why you fell in love in the first place.

Tips for a Better Couples Session

Here are a handful of easy tips to make your couples’ photography session picture-perfect. These tips apply to any couple and don’t take anything special to accomplish.

     Have fun

The most important tip of all, have a good time together! Genuine happiness shines through in photos. The best way to capture that is to loosen up and have some fun. Do things that make each other laugh. Yes, having a camera pointed at you can be intimidating at first, but a good photographer will help you feel at ease. So don’t be afraid to be a little silly. In fact, PLEASE get silly!

     Forget Perfection

Everyone wants their photos to look amazing. You spend a lot of time, effort, and money on a couple’s photoshoot, but coming into it wanting things to be ‘perfect’ can lead to stiff, unattractive pictures that just don’t look natural. Think of the dreaded Olan Mills era. You don’t want to get your photos back and dislike them just because you were too worried about everything being just right that you forgot to relax and let the ‘perfect’ shot simply happen.

Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Comfortable and Confident

Everyone wants to know what the best outfits are for a photo session. The truth is its clothes that you feel comfortable and confident in. Yes, you want to look your best, but if you aren’t comfortable, if you don’t feel confident, that will be evident in every shot taken. Dress for the occasion and ask your photographer for styling tips! Chances are, they know what photographs best and what compliments their editing style.

Compliment Each Other, Don’t Be Twins

I know you’ve seen those old-school studio pics. Families dressed up to match down to every fiber and sporting uncomfortable smiles, the whole vibe is awkward for everyone. Those days are gone. It’s ok to look similar and to have outfits that compliment each other. Choosing a color palette and then coordinating your outfits based on 2-3 colors works best.

     Get Intimate

You can get intimate and still keep things rated PG. Don’t be afraid to get close. Look deep into each other’s eyes and remember why you fell in love in the first place. Share a real kiss or, my favorite prompt, a teeth kiss. I promise it’ll look great on camera. Most importantly, always have physical contact with one another. It creates a connection that the camera can capture.

     Do What You Love

This tip circles back to ‘have fun’. Do what you love and incorporate activities you enjoy into your session. If you’re gamers (board or video, doesn’t matter), have your couple photos doing that. If you love hiking, go out on a trail. Couple photography should encapsulate who you are together and what you enjoy as a couple. That’s what memories are made of.

     Be Creative (But Be Yourselves)

Before your couples’ photography session, you’ve probably scrolled through Pinterest looking for inspiration…and that’s ok.

There are a lot of great, creative ideas out there. Again, creativity goes hand in hand with the #1 tip, but it’s important to be yourselves. If you see something or develop a really clever idea, make sure it aligns with who you are. If both of you aren’t on board, if you’re both not 100% comfortable, then it’s going to show in the final results. But never be afraid to get creative. That’s how some of the cutest photos are born.

Discuss Your Goals with Your Photographer

Before your session, it’s important to discuss your goals with your photographer. I work hard to help you tell the story of your relationship through photos. Knowing what you hope to get out of your couples’ photography session will ensure that you are happier with the results.
